LONGVIEW – Scouts from the Chinook District Boy Scouts of America will collect gently used clothing and household items for Goodwill as part of “Good Turn” activities starting this week. This is the 44th year area scouts have teamed up with Goodwill, which opened a Longview
branch office in 1962. Last year, Goodwill received 2,126 bags filled with items from the event that were recycled through Goodwill’s retail stores.
“We appreciate the work of the scouts and the donations we receive,” said Helen Cole, Human Resources coordinator with Longview Goodwill, part of Tacoma Goodwill Industries. “Money from the sale of gently used and ready-for-display items helps our job-placement and training programs for people with disabilities or disadvantages who want to find work.”
Here’s how the Good Turn Day activities will work:
Cub Scouts will distribute about 6,000 bags Feb. 24, going door to door in selected areas of Longview, Kelso, Castle Rock, Toutle, Kalama, Woodland, Cathlamet, Skamokawa, Rainier and Clatskanie.
The following Saturday, March 3, Boy Scouts will pick up filled bags between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Bags can be left near the front door if the donor won’t be at home.
Additional donations may be in bags or boxes marked clearly for the Boy Scout-Goodwill drive. Extra staff will be on hand at Longview Goodwill, 720 14th Ave., to help unload the donations.
