LONGVIEW – Scouts from the Chinook District Boy Scouts of America will collect gently used clothing and household items for Goodwill on Saturday as part of Good Turn Day.

This is the 45th year scouts have teamed up with Goodwill, which opened a Longview branch office in 1962. Last year, 3,865 bags of items and several large pieces of furniture were collected.

“Goodwill Good Turn Day is a community service project for the scouts,” said Gerald L. Selde, Scoutmaster, noting scouts also earn a merit badge for the work. “Participating Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts reap lifelong benefits by experiencing giving of oneself for the benefit of others.”

Pam Yanez, Longview Store manager helping supervise this year’s event, said scouts will bring bags to the store at 1030 14th Ave. starting at 8 a.m. More than 5,000 bags were distributed last Saturday to areas of Longview, Kelso, Castle Rock, Toutle, Kalama, Woodland, Cathlamet, Skamokawa, Rainier and Clatskanie.

She said the items collected will be used at the Longview Store. Proceeds from the store sales support job-training and placement programs for people with disabilities and disadvantages.

Donors can leave bags near the front door of their home to be picked up by scouts. Additional donations may be in bags or boxes marked clearly for the Boy Scout-Goodwill drive. Extra staff will be on hand at the Longview Goodwill store to help unload the donations.
