TACOMA, WA – Tacoma Goodwill will mobilize more than 750 young people to participate in the 21st Annual Global Youth Service Day, Friday-Sunday, April 24-26, 2009, in Pierce County.

Tacoma Goodwill will receive $2,000, provided by State Farm Companies Foundation, to help with planning local GYSD projects. Youth from around the county will lead, design and carry out several projects at schools and nonprofits throughout the area.

“We are committed to opening doors of hope and opportunity for youth. Volunteerism is a wonderful way to strengthen our community while teaching valuable skills and life lessons,” explained Richard Corak, Tacoma Goodwill director of Workforce Development.

Millions of youth in the United States and in more than 100 countries will plan simultaneous service events and service-learning projects celebrating GYSD. Spanning three days, GYSD is the largest service event in the world and involves young people, ages 5-25.

“It is a distinct honor to work with such amazing organizations,” said Steve Culbertson, president and CEO of Youth Service America. “Their leadership increases the scale and visibility of youth service year-round, and helps youth in America play a lead role in learning about community needs, while giving their time, energy, commitment, and idealism.”
