BONNEY LAKE – A new Goodwill store in Bonney Lake will open Thursday, Dec. 3, with a weekend grand opening sale. The long-anticipated store will feature thousands of new items in a “fashion-forward” shopping experience, with a convenient donation site and be a site for workers with developmental disabilities and disadvantages.
A store-opening ceremony will take place at 8:45 a.m. Dec. 3 at the store, 21153 State Route 410 E. in Bonney Lake Village. Bonney Lake Mayor Neil Johnson Jr. will join Goodwill Board of Directors President Bob Bruback and CEO Terry A. Hayes to celebrate the event. After the 15-minute ceremony, the store will open to the public.
“We are very excited about having a store in this growing community,” said Bruback. “In these tough economic times, a Goodwill store provides many ways to help a community: It’s a way for families to stretch the value of their dollar; a place for people to get that first job or second chance; and a support for our job training and placement services.”
There are several events taking place during the opening weekend Dec. 3-6, including:
• The opportunity for shoppers to win a DVD player, iPod and $50 gas cards daily throughout the event. Other, free giveaways will also be available at the store.
• A New Mattress Truckload Sale, while supplies last. The sale includes a free frame – valued up to $49 – with each mattress purchase. Sale prices start at $199 for a Twin set, $249 for a Full set, $299 for a Queen set, and $399 for King set.
• On Friday, Dec. 4, radio station KMPS 94.1-FM, featuring “Today’s Country,” will broadcast live from the store from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the Stubbs show.
CEO Terry A. Hayes noted Goodwill has already been providing services for Bonney Lake residents – nearly 60 in the past year alone. About a third have participated in the Key to Change financial literacy class Goodwill offers. Other programs residents have taken include Office Essentials and “soft skills” training for job interviews and resume writing.
The store will also host a work site for people with developmental disabilities through Goodwill’s Supported Employment program. The employees will do retail and production work with supervision from a job-skills trainer.
“We are expanding our job training and placement services in Pierce County as part of an initiative to triple services,” Hayes said. “We look forward to making more services available through our stores.”
The new store will provide jobs for about 30 people, from the store manager to supervisors, cashiers, production clerks and donation attendants. About 70 percent of the people hired to work in Goodwill stores are people with disabilities or disadvantages.
Hayes thanked architects BCRA and contractor Mountain Construction. She noted Goodwill signed a 10-year lease with the property owner, Rosen-Harbottle Commercial Real Estate. The Bonney Lake store is 15,850 square feet in size and a former retail store.
Frank Quintana will be the store manager. Quintana has more than two decades of retail management experience, including involvement in a remodel at the Bonney Lake Fred Meyer Store when he worked with that company. Quintana started with Goodwill in August 2009.

The store will be the 25th for the agency, headquartered in Tacoma, and marks the 11th store in Pierce County. Tacoma Goodwill’s service area covers 15 counties, including most of the Olympic Peninsula, Pierce, Thurston and South King counties and east to Yakima and Ellensburg.
