Custodial Skills
Providing the most advanced custodial training program in Western Washington.
The Program
The Custodial Skills training program is a blend of classroom instruction along with hands-on, supervised training within Goodwill facilities. The program is built on the realization that real-world job duties of a building custodian now exceed traditional janitorial cleaning duties. That’s why the program includes additional training in:

- Fire Safety
- Health Hazards
- Energy Conservation
- Environmental Cleaning
- Building Security
- Hospitality Cleaning
Eight Essential Skills
The program includes eight janitorial/custodial skill sets plus evaluations in positive work behaviors, professionalism or “soft-skills,” which are necessary to obtain, keep and progress in a job.
- Proper care and maintenance of tools and equipment.

- Correct use of cleaning compounds and solutions.
- How to properly clean up blood and other bodily fluids.
- Hard floor care: cleaning, stripping, burnishing, restoring and finishing.
- Soft floor care: carpet cleaning, extrication, spin bonneting and spot removal.
- General office cleaning: restrooms, walls and light fixtures.
- Professional window cleaning.
- Hotel/Motel cleaning or hospitality.
The training system allows for students to join at any point and works on a low instructor-to-student ration allowing for individually tailored, on the job training. Graduation occurs when satisfactory performance evaluations are achieved in each of the eight skill sets. An estimated training time is 30-45 days and upon graduation, a certificate of completion is awarded.
Equipment
In addition to the usual tools and equipment used by janitors and custodians, such as mops, brooms, buckets, ladders, gloves, janitor carts, dustpans, stripping pads and cleaning chemicals and compounds, training is provided on the following equipment:

- Wet Vac
- Portable Carpet Extractor
- Pro-Team Super Coach Vacuum
- High and Low Speed Buffers
- Upright Vacuum
- Propane Buffer
- Auto Scrubber
