Army Veteran David Richmond served for 20 years as a combat engineer, deploying five times to locations in the Middle East and Europe. “My career was definitely a roller coaster ride—and I wouldn’t trade it for the world!”

After retiring from the military, David discovered he needed support for a smooth transition to civilian life. “My biggest challenge was finding the right connections. I got a lot of useful tips, but it was difficult to decipher what was best for me,” he said. That’s when he discovered Goodwill’s Operation: GoodJobs.

“The team at Goodwill asked me lots of questions to find out what kind of job I wanted as a civilian.  I told them I wanted to work as a canine handler.” Goodwill helped David focus his job search and create a strong resume. He soon had an interview.

“I didn’t know Goodwill would go into such depth on my job search. They set up a mock interview that helped me prepare for my interview. When I finished, I felt great—and I had an offer waiting for me before I got home!”

Today David has a new career working with explosive detection canines. His job takes him to events around the country, including National Football League games. “The work is exciting and sometimes challenging, and my military background lets me bring a different perspective to the job.”
